VAL Shortlisted for Compact Award

Compact Voice has announced that Voluntary Action Leeds and West York's Police and Crime Commissioner have been shortlisted for a Compact Award in the "Innovation" category.

VAL and the West Yorks Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, have been shortlisted by Compact Voice for an award. The Award Ceremony will take place in London on Wednesday 5 November, with the Minister for Civil Society Rob Wilson present and over 120 people from the voluntary and community sector all over the country in attendance.

The nomination is for the work that VAL and the PCC have done together since 2012 to enable the sector in West Yorkshire to play a more strategic role in respect of policing, community safety and the criminal justice system.

Whilst individual organisations have long played critical roles, in respect of domestic abuse, sexual violence, victim support, drugs and alcohol treatment services, and working to reduce re-offending, its strategic role has not been as well developed. In West Yorkshire that has started to change.

Tangible benefits have included:
- the secondment of David Smith to act as the PCC's Third Sector Adviser
- the appointment of a Third Sector Advisory Group including experienced people from right across the sector in West Yorks
- the organisation of regular conferences and event to engage the wider sector, such as the launch of the Leeds Crime Reduction Network at the new Leeds District Police HQ earlier this month
- the establishment of a grant programme for small community groups, worth over £1 million each year, with the sector represented on its decision making Board
- the chance to influence commissioning processes, especially through robust equality impact assessments
- a seat round the table with the leaders of the criminal justice system at the PCC's Partnership executive Group

This initiative builds on the success of the Compact for Leeds - a set of principles about working arrangements between the public and third sectors to which the PCC signed up early in his term of office.
